The Chancellor of the University of Cantabria (UC), Ángel Pazos, accompanied by José Juan Cobo, commercial director of Companies of the Territorial Cantabria of Banco Santander; Mario Nava, director of the European Commission’s financial system surveillance and crisis management; Philip Molyneux, a professor at the University of Bangor (UK), as well as Myriam García Olalla and Begoña Torre, representing SANFI, inaugurated at the Hotel Santemar in Santander the annual conference of the European Association of University Teachers of Banking and Finance ‘, Wolpertinger Conference 2017.
The University of Cantabria, through members of the project team “Government, incentives and risk management in global banks”, funded by the Santander Financial Institute (SANFI), organized the conference in collaboration with the Jean Monnet program of the European Union, which brought together more than seventy professors and researchers experts in banking and finance of different European universities.
In his speech, the Rector Pazos, after welcoming the attendees, highlighted “the relevance” of the topics discussed in this forum, such as the evolution of banking models, sector regulation, banking supervision or governance corporate governance, while relying on the speakers to contribute “a little light” to these issues, which are on the agendas of all international governments.
Likewise, the deputy director of SANFI, Begoña Torre, stressed the importance of this congress to “share ideas and open new lines of collaboration” in Banking among the experts, who addressed through 60 papers the new perspectives of the sector in the current context.
Coordinated by the professor of Financial Economics and Accounting of the UC and professor of the SANFI, Myriam García Olalla, the conference was attended by invited speakers of great importance as Jesus Saurina, director of the department of Financial Stability of the Bank of Spain, and Mario Nava, his counterpart in the European Commission’s Financial system surveillance and crisis management.
After the open ceremony, Nava was in charge of imparting the inaugural conference under the title ‘Culmination of the Banking Union: Challenges and Perspectives’.
